A Helping Hand

You're learning German?

Fantastic!

I hope that you never encounter a single problem as you master the German language.

But... Where will you go if you do have a problem?

If you have one, your German teacher or professor will certainly help you.

Your German-speaking acquaintances will be happy to assist you, I'm sure.

Or you can get a tutor. Of course, tutors cost money. What's that you say? Money's a little scarce right now?

The Good News

Well, today is your lucky day.

You can get a free German tutor at the About.com web site.

Here's how:

  1. Sign up for membership in the German Language Forum. (Register here.)*
  2. Log in and browse to the 1:1 Classes section.
  3. Request a tutor. Here is an example of such a request.

-----------------------------------------
* Need help registering?  I made you a step-by-step, illustrated tutorial.

Another great site

You can also find free tutoring at www.aboutgerman.net. This site is run by the very highly-respected educator and author Hyde Flippo. (Great name, isn't it?)

Just go to the Learn German Forum and ask for tutoring and someone will help you for free. Membership is required.

Yes, it is that simple. :-)

The World's Largest Online Language Learning Community

Want another possibility?

Something a little more structured perhaps?

Well, http://www.livemocha.com is very cool.

What is Live Mocha? From Wikipedia: Livemocha is an online language learning community claiming more than six million members from 195 countries. Livemocha offers free basic language courses in 38 languages and more advanced courses -- called "Active Courses" -- in five languages including English, French, Spanish, German and Italian. The Active Courses cost $19.95/month or $149.95 for a one-year subscription. The company claims that those who complete the "Active" courses will achieve conversational fluency. Livemocha offers grammar instructions, reading comprehension exercises, interactive role playing and both live and asynchronous interaction with other native speakers within the Livemocha community. When learners submit coursework for peer review, native speakers in that language can provide feedback on how that learner is progressing. Users can aid others in learning the languages that they are proficient in while learning other languages themselves.

The bottom line is that Live Mocha membership comes with tutors/mentors who will help you learn the German language. - http://www.livemocha.com/active-german

The downside is that only the first few lessons are free.

Bummer.

Live Mocha Intro

But wait! There is a Free Alternative to Live Mocha

If you like the Live Mocha concept, but really do no want to pay for it, think about http://sharedtalk.com/.

Shared Talk is a language learning community from the people who make Rosette Stone.

In Thier Own Words

"Rosetta Stone’s SharedTalk is a community of people from around the world and is dedicated to language exchange and language learning. Rosetta Stone is enthusiastic about the opportunity SharedTalk offers language learners around the world to strengthen their language skills through immersion and conversation. Rosetta Stone is committed to making the SharedTalk users experience the best, most effective learning experience possible."

Pretty cool, huh?

I don't speak German. Originally from the Bronx and studied Spanish for 5 years. I can read it, mostly. I can pick up the general direction when I listen but because I don't really get to use it, I don't speak it well at all. It is on the list of one of the things I would like to do. Wondered if shared language was for other languages too? Looks like it might be.

Hi, Maralin,

I'm also originally from The Bronx. It seems there are lots of us who started out there and moved away.

Yes, at Shared Talk, dozens of languages are available.

It's pretty amazing, really.

Thank you for your comment!
